How we train

At Midtown Mutts, we help dogs and their humans build stronger, happier relationships through compassionate, science-based training. We are committed to positive reinforcement training methods rooted in modern behavioral science.

This means we use reward-based techniques—such as treats, praise, toys, and play—to reinforce desirable behaviors.

Reactivity Group Classes
6 week class for $300

Our 6 Week Dog Reactivity class is designed to help dogs who bark and lunge at other dogs. Does your dog bark and lunge at other dogs? Dog reactivity is a term we use to describe a set of behaviors where a dog barks, pulls towards, growls, or lunges or a combination of these behaviors towards another dog, person, bicycle, skateboarder or a variety of other stimuli.

By utilizing visual barriers, thoughtfully introducing the dogs in the class to the facility environment, and carefully escorting the dogs into the building one by one, we’ve designed this class to avoid dog reactions.

In this class:
  • Your dog will learn to relax on a mat behind their barrier in the room with 3 other dogs
  • Your dog will practice calm visual exposures to other dogs
  • You will learn more tools and skills for encountering dogs out on your walks
NOTE: This class is not ideal for dogs who have big reactive responses to people or other stimuli, as the setups will be primarily focus on other dogs. If you are looking for training on reacitivity to people consider our private classes.

Not sure if your dog is a good fit for this class? Book a free 15 minute phone consultation and we can discuss whether this class, our group class membership or private lessons are right for you.

Wondering if Agility for Fun is right for your dog?
Here are some things to consider:
  • Is your dog able to focus in group classes?

Dogs who are easily distracted during group classes are welcome, however, they may need to spend more time building focus and taking decompression breaks as needed.

  • How are your dog's basic skills like stay and recall?

It is strongly recommended that your dog know a basic stay and recall, as these are important foundation skills. Don't worry if these skills still need work, we will be strengthening them throughout class.

  • How old is your dog?

Dogs of any age are welcome, provided they are fully vaccinated. Puppies under one year of age will be given modified exercises designed to reduce impact on their growing bodies.
